# ChatGPT App

> Access your prompts, documents, and collections from ChatGPT conversations. The Context Repo ChatGPT App connects with OAuth to the hosted MCP server's 29 tools, including the OpenAI Apps SDK Company Knowledge tools `search` and `fetch`.

The Context Repo ChatGPT App gives ChatGPT access to your prompts, documents, and collections. Instead of copying and pasting between tabs, you can ask ChatGPT to search your workspace, retrieve a prompt, or create a document. The ChatGPT host decides which advertised tool to call.

It connects to the same hosted MCP server used by other clients like Claude, Cursor, and VS Code. That server registers 29 tools: 27 repository tools plus the OpenAI Apps SDK Company Knowledge tools `search` and `fetch`. Authentication uses OAuth, so you sign in with your Context Repo account from ChatGPT.

Add Context Repo from ChatGPT Plugins. ChatGPT will connect the app with OAuth.

## Getting Started

### Turn on Developer mode

In ChatGPT, open **Settings → Security and login** and turn on **Developer mode**. Availability can depend on your account and workspace policy.

### Open ChatGPT Plugins

Go to [ChatGPT Plugins](https://chatgpt.com/plugins) and select the plus button.

### Connect the MCP server

Enter these values:

| Field | Value |
| ----------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Name** | Context Repo |
| **Description** | Access your prompts, documents, and collections. Search, create, update, and organize your AI context. |
| **MCP Server URL** | `https://contextrepo.com/mcp` |
| **Authentication** | OAuth |
| **OAuth Client ID** | _(leave blank)_ |
| **OAuth Client Secret** | _(leave blank)_ |

Check the "I understand and want to continue" confirmation if ChatGPT shows it, then create the app connection. ChatGPT will connect the app with OAuth. Sign in with the same Context Repo account you use on the dashboard.

> **Note:** No API key is needed for the ChatGPT App. The ChatGPT connection uses OAuth.

### Start using your context

Ask ChatGPT anything about your workspace. For example:

- _"List my prompts about code review"_
- _"Search my documents for rate limiting"_
- _"Create a new prompt called Weekly Standup Notes"_
- _"Show me version history for my API docs prompt"_

ChatGPT picks the right tool and returns results directly in the conversation.

## Available Tools

The ChatGPT App connects to all 29 hosted Context Repo MCP tools, organized into 8 categories:

| Category | Tools | What they do |
| ----------------------------------- | ------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **User Info** | 1 tool | Get your account details |
| **Prompts** | 7 tools | List, get, create, update, delete prompts, plus view and restore version history |
| **Documents** | 7 tools | List, get, create, update, delete documents, plus view and restore version history |
| **Collections** | 7 tools | List, get, create, update, delete collections, plus add and remove items |
| **Search** | 1 tool | Find prompts, documents, and collections by semantic or keyword search |
| **Deep Search** | 3 tools | Search within document content, read specific chunks, and navigate document hierarchy |
| **Reasoning** | 1 tool | Get a best-effort cited answer with citations and non-exhaustive limitations. Disagreements appear as ordinary cited statements in the answer. |
| **Company Knowledge compatibility** | 2 tools | Search the catalog and fetch one prompt, document, or collection in the shape expected by the OpenAI Apps SDK |

## What You Can Do

The ChatGPT App connects to the same tool inventory as the MCP server. ChatGPT decides which tools it will offer or call in a conversation. Here are common workflows:

### Prompt management

Ask ChatGPT to find, use, or modify your prompt templates:

- _"Show me my code review prompts"_ — uses `search_prompts` with a search filter
- _"Get the full content of my PR Review Assistant prompt"_ — uses `read_prompt`
- _"Update my deployment checklist prompt with a new security section"_ — uses `update_prompt`
- _"Restore my API docs prompt to the version from last week"_ — uses `get_prompt_versions` and `restore_prompt_version`

### Document search and retrieval

Find exactly what you need across your entire workspace:

- _"Search my documents for authentication patterns"_ — uses `find_items` with semantic search
- _"What do my research notes say about caching strategies?"_ — uses `deep_search` for content-level results
- _"Show me more context around that caching section"_ — uses `deep_expand` to navigate surrounding content

### Collection organization

Manage your knowledge base structure through conversation:

- _"List my collections"_ — uses `list_collections`
- _"Add my latest document to the Research collection"_ — uses `add_to_collection`
- _"Create a new collection called Q1 Planning"_ — uses `create_collection`

## How Authentication Works

The ChatGPT App uses a hosted **OAuth** flow for authentication. Here's what that means in practice:

1. When you first use the app, ChatGPT redirects you to Context Repo's sign-in page.
2. You log in with your existing Context Repo credentials (email, Google, GitHub, or any method you've set up).
3. After authorizing, ChatGPT manages the connection until it expires, is revoked, or needs authorization again.

This differs from the documented `context-repo-mcp` stdio setup for Cursor or Claude Desktop, which uses a Context Repo API key. The ChatGPT App does not require you to generate a key.

> **Note:** OAuth and API-key connections resolve to the same Context Repo account, but they do not carry identical authority. Interactive session and OAuth tokens carry the signed-in user's authority. API keys are limited to the prompt or document scopes granted to that key; collections share the document scopes.

## Troubleshooting

### Sign-in prompt doesn't appear

Try starting a new conversation with the Context Repo app. If the sign-in flow still doesn't trigger, clear your ChatGPT browser cache and try again.

### "Authentication failed" error

Make sure you're signing in with the same account you use on the Context Repo dashboard. If you have multiple accounts, check which email address is associated with your workspace.

### Tools not responding

If a tool call returns an error, verify that your Context Repo account is active. You can test your account by logging into the [dashboard](https://contextrepo.com/dashboard) directly.

### ChatGPT expects an old field or tool shape

ChatGPT can cache the MCP tool schemas it discovered when you connected the
app. After Context Repo changes a tool's parameters or output, refresh the
Context Repo app in ChatGPT before testing again.

If ChatGPT still sends a removed parameter or expects an old response field,
remove the Context Repo app connection, create it again with
`https://contextrepo.com/mcp`, and complete the OAuth authorization again.
Then start a new conversation so ChatGPT discovers the current schemas.
